I Don’t Need These Any More

September 21, 2011

It appears that all of Dad’s business records are gone and family memorabilia too. There are two large filing cabinets in the locked office and they are empty except for a few remaining files.  Dad and I are the only ones with keys and Dad, nor his live in caregiver, know where the files have gone.  Years of memories are lost without a trace, but with no leads I eventually give up the search.

Later, I mention the situation to Dad’s neighbor Sam.  Sam remembers a bonfire in Dad’s backyard a couple of months ago.  When Sam stopped by to see what was going on, Dad explained that he didn’t need any of these old papers.

If only I had realized the risk, I could have taken the keys to those file cabinets away earlier.  As I look back on the precious memories those cabinets once held, I realize that this is another lesson learned the hard way.
