If they only knew him

November 8, 2011

When I was a kid, Gramps was patient.  He was always polite and he was the smartest one in the family. When I hear about how he yelled at someone or how he took and ate someone’s dinner off the counter, I can’t help but want to explain his reasoning.

You would yell too if someone came into your home and put their shoes up on your couch.  If you didn’t know the words to ask for a snack, you would probably grab food off the counter.

It’s so hard sometimes to watch people getting angry and frustrated with him when I know he just wants some control over his life and home.

Stay close to your Gramps. He needs to be surrounded by someone like you. When I was a caregiver, I learned this: However bizarre my mother’s behavior was, I believed it was the only way she knew how to retain her dignity and to retain the self that was disappearing. How could I not admire and honor her for her efforts.
