89th Birthday

August 28, 2013

We had a great birthday celebration!  The staff and fellow residents sang Happy Birthday to Dad at breakfast and then again at lunch and finally at dinner.  After dinner everyone had ice cream.  I brought in his two favorites – snickers and cherry chocolate.  He had a bowl of each.

In the afternoon I sat with Dad and shared all the birthday cards he had received.  We opened his presents and played with the various new toys.  I had fun shopping for toys that would catch his attention and make him smile.  There is a windup elephant that walks and a windup dog that jumps.  He laughed at both of them. The slinky seemed like a good idea, but they aren’t much fun if you can’t have them walk down stairs.

We called Dad’s kids so they could also wish him a Happy Birthday. Dad didn’t talk very much but he smiled and laughed as my two brothers and sister each talked to him.  He particularly enjoyed having my sister sing Happy Birthday to him.
